Very interesting post! I do wonder if there are only two independent inventions of writing proper, though. Cuniform, Egyptian/Canaanite writing and my favourite Linear A/Cretan writing did arise in a similar part of the world but don’t seem to be directly related. Is the current theory that two of those were originally proto-writing and made the development to ‘proper’ writing after contact with the other writing system?
