You characters aren’t from the suburbs. They live in nature.

Make the environment a character in the story. It’s got more to do with what happens than in most stories. The land, the cold, the death waiting behind every bush and tree. The dead lower branches of the trees could easily kill with a deep scratch. These people don’t live in the same world we do.

The Strange One by Fred Bosworth is another good example of this. Wagamese does this.

Good start. But as an English teacher let me say show, don’t tell.

Richard Wagamese is a great example. His Medicine Walk is superb. You could do a lot worse than to emulate him. He’s got a few novels on Scribd if you subscribe. Audio.
